Because We’re Crazy People, I Tell You

by Toni

Did you have a good holiday?  I hope so.  We took it easy this year.  Hung out with the family, roasted some hot dogs, set off a few fireworks.  Okay, that last bit is a complete understatement.  Independance Day ranks right next to Christmas on our favorite holiday list.  In fact for us, it is very much like Christmas.  We go to the store with our budget in hand and leave the store with our budget in the trash.  See.

Fireworks2007

I should tell you that we didn’t set all of these off… yet.  We usually do two shows each year.  One on the Fourth for our Tulsa family and friends and then another sometime in August for the family out in Gate.  This year we are adding a show in Arkansas for a different group of relatives.  …. because we are crazy people, I tell you.

To our credit we only go crazy like this on special occasions.  It’s not an everyday sort of thing (so you can just stop looking for that insane asylum number right now).  And for Independance day the craziness seems limited to the four walls of the TNT Fireworks Superstore.  This is why:

  • You can get the most of “bang” for your buck.  (Punny but true.) Mom and Pop shops may be nostalgic but they can’t offer the best deals.  For even more savings don’t wait until the last minute.  Shop the first day they are open when almost everything is “Buy One, Get One Free.”
  • They are willing to negotiate.  If you’re spending a lot of cash (or even if you’re not) don’t be afraid to ask for discounts and/or substitutions to get the widest variety for the least amount.
  • TNT has a “NO Duds” guarantee.  They store and later sell their product in a climate controlled environment.  So in spite of the rainy/muggy weather outside, everything you buy will work.
  • Similarly, climate control means a pleasant place to shop…especially with kids.
  • All the staff really knows about the product.  They don’t just guess or read the label.  They’ve actually seen each thing work and can describe it to you.
  • It is run by a local church who uses the profit for their ministry.

WFMW – Best Litter Box Combination Ever

by Toni

Throughout the years we have owned cats off and on.  The “off and on” is important because during every “off” time we gave all our kitty stuff away and purchased anew at the next “on.”  And that is important to explain because I want to you understand that I have tried a LOT of litter boxes. … Well, not me personally … the cats have tried a lot … well, actually each cat only tried one but that’s not the point.  The point isI know about litter boxes.  (I put the point in bold in case you got lost in all the rambling at the beginning.) I also know the two most important questions to ask yourself when purchase a new litter box.  Is it easy to clean?  Will the cat be able to kick/track litter everywhere?  One hopes the answers will be “yes” and “no” in that order but only time will tell.  Last week, I discovered for the first time ever a perfect “yes/no” combination.  The Omega Paw Self Cleaning Litter Box is incredibly easy to clean (“self-cleaning” is a bit of a misnomer) and it’s completly enclosed except for the entrance so litter stays in.  For the little bit of litter that gets tracked out, I added a simple, litter mat and voila!  No more mess.  All told I spent about $35 dollars on the solution which is quite a bit more than your standard litter box cost but I figure I’ll make up the difference in headache medicine.

WFMW – Sidewalk Parking

by Toni

No, I don’t mean parking ON the sidewalk… that’s just silly.  I mean parking NEAR the sidewalk and for good reason.  Two young children getting out of the car in a crowded parking lot or on a busy street can be a very scary thing indeed. (to the mom… the children usually don’t care at all)  Sidewalk parking is my attempt at safety.  Most places have at least a few spots in front of the sidewalk.  Sometimes these parking spaces are not obvious.  They may be far from the door or even around the corner from your destination.  To me it doesn’t matter.  I park, remind the children to “go to the sidewalk”, then it’s a free-for all to see who can get there first.  Okay, not really.  Sister gets out and waits on the sidewalk while I help Brother.  Once we are all together again I let them run ahead to a specified point (you can go to the lightpole, or that red line, or the second bush or the door with the blue letters).  Not only do I not have to worry about them running out into the street; they get to release some extra energy before we enter a store.  This is especially helpful on days with many errands.  Sometimes it takes a little longer but overall there is less stress and that works for me.

Free Activity E-Book

by Toni

My kids are with me all day, every day, every season so “summer” boredom has a way of becoming all year boredom or at least it used to.  Free Stuff 4 Kids is one of my favorite resources for curing “But there’s nothing to do!!” syndrome.  And right now if you subscribe to her site you can download a free ebook with coloring pages, connect the dots, mazes and such.  It reminds me of the big, fat activity books my mom used to always get us for trips and since we plan on being in the car a lot over the next couple of weeks, I printed two copies and put them in some extra presentation folders I had lying around.

There are all sorts of places on the web where one can find activities for kids and I could spend my time looking for them but I like letting someone else do the work of gathering those resources into one place because spending more time playing with my children instead of spending time looking for things to play with my children works for me.

For more ideas all in one place check out this week’s “Mom, I’m Bored” Edition of Works for Me Wednesday.

Oh, and have you clicked on the Kid Pages in the sidebar?  That’s fun too.

WFMW – Too Many Hair Clips?

by Toni

I had two problems.  First Grandma had me order an acrylic tea bag holder from an online catalog.  Unfortunately, it arrived chipped and Grandma decided to return it.  Rather she decided to have me return it.  I HATE returning things.  It’s such a hassle.  So the box sat and sat and sat and would have sat some more except for my other problem:  too many little girl hair clips.

Look!  Here’s the solution we all liked.

Sister loves the box because it’s pretty.  I love it because she is actually using her hair clips now that they are not tucked in the dark recesses of some drawer.

WFMW – Mopping Made Easy

by Toni

Well, easier at least.  I am a firm believer in having the right tools for a given job.  Sure I could use the handle of a screwdriver as a hammer but it is so much more effective to actually use a hammer.  For this reason, I am always looking for better tools to help with the housework.  Especially with those tasks I don’t particularly enjoy.  Mopping is one of those.  It didn’t used to be a problem.  At our old house only the kitchen and bathrooms required mopping but here it’s different.  Except for the few rugs I have scattered here and there every floor is tile and therefore must be mopped.  At first I tried to use my traditional mopping method.  I’d fill the sink with water & soap.  Then… Dip mop.  Hand ring mop.  Swipe mop over floor.  Repeat.  This is fine if the only floor you’re cleaning is small and right next to the sink but the WHOLE house?!?  There had to be a better way.  I longed to get one of these:

but the price and the bulk of it nixed that thought.  Then lightning struck.  I replaced my old, gunky string mop with this wringer version from Vileda, added a bucket I already owned and an unused plant stand from our garage.  Voila, my very own mop bucket on the cheap.

And do you want to know the best part?  Okay, actually there’s two best parts.  First, it can easily be dissasembled and the parts used for other purposes and who doesn’t like a multi-tasking tool?  And second, now my kids seem to think mopping is fun and want to pitch in.

WFMW – Unschooling Journal

by Toni

So we’ve started this path into unschooling.  If you don’t know what that is, don’t feel bad.  Six months ago I didn’t either.  All I knew was that as the time approached for Sister to start school I felt in my heart that was not the right direction for us.  For a while we sent her to a nearby private school.  Excellent program.  Outstanding teachers and facility.  But parent/teacher conferences reavealed a startling fact.  Sister was way ahead of the other students in many areas and exactly on level in the rest.  At one point her teacher actually said to me, “Whatever you’re doing at home, keep doing it because it’s working.”  I pondered that statement for a long while.  What were we doing at home?  Well, we asked a lot of questions and we searched out the answers together.  We read … a lot and from all sorts of sources.  We allowed Sister to lead the way on a lot of projects viewing our role more as discovery assistants rather than teachers.  We provided a variety of puzzles, games, art supplies, etc.  not with any particular task in mind but just in case creativity struck suddenly.  All sorts of research on homeschooling attached a name to our style of learning:  unschooling.  The more I read, the more enamored I became.  So now, even though Sister needn’t officially start school until next year, we are conducting an experiment.  Actually we are just continuing to live our lives as we always have but now I am recording it.  I started a new blog.  You are welcome to visit of course but I think you will find it rather dull reading.  At the end of each day, I jot down what we did that can be catagorized into school “subjects” and then I label my post with those subjects.  For example if we read a book then the post will be labeled “reading”.  If we read a history book then it will be labeled “reading” and “history”.  I find it helpful to review the day and I see possible benefits if we ever move to a state where homeschooling is more regulated than in Oklahoma.  It is also comforting to my husband who is my one and only feed subscriber.  Not only can he see that unschooling works, he gets a glimpse of what we do while he is at work and shares in moments I might otherwise forget to mention.

True unschoolers will probably laugh at my methodology but keeping an unschooling journal works for me.

WFMW – Navigating All Those Great Tips

by Toni

I love Wednesdays.  I look forward all week to a new slew of tips from all the Works-For-Me-Wednesday participants.  There is nary a week that I don’t learn a new thing (or twenty) but I had a little problem.  There are so many tips at this point that reading through them all in one setting means ignoring my house and childen for an unacceptable amount of time.  What to do?  My husband showed me the benefits of tabbed browsing a while back and this was the perfect application if every there was.  Here’s my system:

Starting with #’s 1-5, I skim through and open the ones of interest to me in new tabs.  I then skip over and read them (opening successive interesting links in their own tabs).  As I finish one I close it’s tab.  When all the tabs are closed, I stop.  Leave the computer.  And do something productive for at least half an hour.  When I do return, I repeat the process with #’s 6-10 and so on.  Make sense?

I find it so easy to get sucked in by that screen, following link after link until my eyes are glazed over and I can barely mumble a coherent answer to my children’s simple questions.  Now I have an end point.  It’s like putting a bookmark in a book knowing you can pick up right where you left off – not missing a thing.

If you don’t know what I’m talking about then you need to go hereShannon’s got a great thing going and I’m sure she’d love to see your name on the list too.

WFMW – Have Diapers Can Travel

by Toni

CAR

EDITION

When Sister was an infant she hated having her diaper changed in store bathrooms. Even when the facilites were nice and clean (which they mostly weren’t) the random loud flushing and hand drying of the other patrons bothered her.  So we tried to be at home for changes as much as possible and just did the best we could while out and about.  When Brother came along I was determined not have the same hassles so I created a diaper changing station in the trunk of my car and made a habit of changing him before we went into a store. This obviously did not work so well for the winter months or when it was raining but it was GREAT the rest of the time. To make it easy to switch vehicles and to keep everything from scattering all over the trunk, I kept my supplies (a stack of diapers, a box of pop-up wipes, rash cream & a single onesie) in a small open-topped canvas bag with handles. My changing mat was simply a folded blanket covered with a waterproof mattress pad.  Many a time we took the blanket out for a picnic and the mattress pad was handy to put under children in wet swimsuits. Another plus about changing in the trunk – the light fascinated Brother such that he would actually stay still for the change.

I know it may seem a bit odd and I got more than one inquiring stare from well-meaning bystanders but it worked for me.

WFMW – Natural Air Fresheners

by Toni

On the one hand, I like it when my home smells nice.  It makes me smile and feel good about myself as a homemaker even if everything else is *ahem” less than perfect.  On the other hand store bought air fresheners, besides lasting only a few minutes and being a complete waste of money better spent on chocolate, spray a host of unwanted chemicals in the air along with their fake scent.

What to do? What to do?  No problem.  My home almost always contains the ingredients for a simple potpurri.  I bet yours does too.  Here are some of my favorites.

In a small crockpot, add lemon wedges, apple slices, and half an orange cut into pieces.  (I say half an orange because I usually eat the other half as a snack but you can use the whole thing if you like.)  Leave the rind on each of these and add a couple of cinnamon sticks and a few cloves.  Fill the pot with water just above the fruit and leave to simmer.

For a lighter, less “holiday” scent, use several sprigs of mint and water.  Or just use the citrus and water without the rest.  There are any number of possibilities.  If you like the scent of it in your cupboard chances are you will also like it “mulled”.

If you must have a spray freshener consider adding five to ten drops of essential oil and 2 cups of water to a spritzing bottle.

A lovely scented home without chemicals works for me.
