You will need: baking soda, food coloring, vinegar, scoops, a cookie sheet or muffin tin, squirt bottles and children. (Technically, the children are optional but I’d try to include them if possible because, generally speaking, they will triple the joy of a project like this.)
The setup: Fill the squirt bottles with vinegar and add food coloring as desired. Take all ingredients outside. Step back. Watch. Take pictures.
You can prep the baking soda on the cookie sheet if you like; but if you followed the instructions and are, in fact, outside then might I suggest letting the wee ones do the scooping.
(Children need not be small —- all sizes seem to work equally well.)
Think process. Not product.
Don’t rush in to explain that mixing two colors creates a new one. Sometimes, teachable moments can just be about the fun. They are still learning. I promise.
Yes, there is a chicken in this photo. I offer no apologies.
Pretty, isn’t it? Edible too …. not yummy but not toxic either. Just the kind of paint that allows a mommy to snap pictures in peace.
Eventually, the activity may leave the previously designated painting area. It’s okay. You’re outside, remember.
Must. Use. Every. Last. Drop. (Not really, but you probably will.)
When all the fizzies are finally fizzed out, break out a sponge and a bucket full of water. Clean up can be fun too.

What a fabulous idea!! Miss you guys. I hope you are doing well.
