And Today Started Out So Well Too …

by Toni

First, Dora who has been feverish and grumpy for days and who developed a terrible looking rash to go along with her grumpiness was finally happy and (basically) well again.  Then while Will attended a men’s breakfast at our church the kids and I had a leisurely breakfast and made some progress on house projects.  For lunch we cleared the fridge of leftovers and then in between kid naps and cleaning and other sundry activities Will and I talked some philosophy and did some goal setting and had general grown up conversation.  It was lovely.

And then the tide of goodness turned.

Brother complained of a stomach ache but we were on our way out the door to attend a party so we gave him some water and told him we’d eat soon.  He hadn’t eaten much at lunch so it was probably just that, right?  Wrong.  Moments after walking through the door at our destination Brother blessed Will (who was holding him) with all the lunch he had eaten and part of breakfast too.  Will did a quick about face and took him out on the front lawn to finish and clean up.  A lady having a garage sale across the street saw what was happening and came over with a clean shirt for Will.  We were exceedingly grateful for her generosity because his other shirt was un-wearable.  Besides the new shirt was actually pretty cool.

Having survived an uncomfortable evening, we are now going to bed early ~ all of us.  Goodnight world, here’s to a better tomorrow.

Painting With Toddlers

by Toni

Today we painted.

Brother used string and poster paint.  Sister used brushes and gouache.

Dora used construction paper and water….

and that was fortunate because her brush seemed to equally divide its time between her paper and her mouth.

At the Firehouse

by Toni

Funny story ~ One day in second grade I asked permission to go to the restroom.  My teacher said, “yes” and I left the room.  Not more than 5 minutes later I returned to a completely deserted classroom.  For the next two hours I divided my time between waiting in the empty classroom and wandering the campus of our little school.  Eventually, my class returned.  They had gone to the fire station.  For years I lamented not the fact that as a second grader I was left alone for two hours but that I had missed out on an essential childhood field trip.  Today that sad chapter finally found a happy conclusion made all the sweeter because I got to share it with the best classmates ever: hubby and our three kiddos. :)

When Brother finally got all the gear on, including the jacket, he actually fell over after about 3 steps it was so heavy.  Fortunately, it was also well padded. :) DSCN1140 DSCN1147 DSCN1148

Our Day Began ….

with this behind our house.

It came in as fast as it left because I had been sitting on the back porch with Dora and had only just come inside when we heard a strange noise (the sound of the burner being turned on and off).  Stepping back out to see what it was we saw the balloon as big as anything just beyond our back fence.  Sister ran upstairs to get a better view and said she could see the people in the basket.  How random and fun was that?!

In other news, we had a great visit with some old friends who came for lunch.  Thanks Steve and Jen for making the drive to see us!
