Modified Clue

by Toni

Remember this board game by Parker Brothers?

DSCN0440

It clearly states on the box “Ages 8+” and yet the board and the little people and the little weapons (especially the little weapons) have fascinated Brother for the couple of years now.  He’s five.  About once every couple of weeks or so he pulls out the board and the people and the weapons and wants to play a round.  Unfortunately, although he is older and can read a little, he is no more ready now to play the actual game with the actual rules than he was at age three when this obsession started.   Sooo, we made up new rules.  Our version has nothing to do with who-done-it but it does use the critical pieces (the weapons).  Here’s how we play.

*Lay out the board with the people in their proper places

*Have the children place the weapons in whatever rooms they like.  One weapon per room.

*Have each player choose the character they’d like to be. (This character’s location will also be their starting point.)

*Remove the character cards from the deck and deal out (face up) the remaining cards making sure that in the end everyone has the same total number of cards. (Any odd cards may be returned to the box.)

*Roll the dice to determine order of play.  Highest # goes first.

*The goal of this new game is to advance your playing piece to every location in your hand by rolling the dice.  The first player to do so is the winner.

A Few Notes:

*Because you want to travel by the most efficient path possible (and it make the goal clearer for  little ones) it is a good idea to arrange your cards (or help little ones arrange theirs) in the order you wish to proceed before play begins.

*After you visit a location or pick up a weapon turn that card over so you (and the other players) will know how close you are to finishing.

*You may only turn over one card per turn.

*If you roll more than you need to enter a room but you enter the room anyway, you forfeit the extra spaces.

*It takes two turns to use a secret passage. One turn to enter a corner room and the next turn to use the passage. Even so, this is sometimes a great way to get to the opposite side of the board.

Here is a sample hand dealt to Professor Plum:

Since his starting point is next to the Study and the Library it makes the most sense for him to go one of those two places first.

DSCN0436

After he visits the Library and the Study, Plum will make his way across the board to the Lounge to pick up the Candlestick. He could, if he wanted to, go through the Hall to get there but it would cost him an extra turn to do so since he cannot enter and exit a room on the same turn.

Finally, in this sample Professor Plum must pick up the Rope and visit the Dining Room but by a strange quirk of fate the Rope is IN the Dining Room.  It will take three turns for our poor Professor to accomplish his tasks. He must enter the Dining Room (turn over that card), exit the Dining Room, and then enter the Dining Room again to pick up the rope (turn over that card).

At this point Professor Plum has completed the round and if he did it before anyone else he is the winner.

***********

This makes for a much simplified game that most ages can play.  Also, it’s good for short attention spans (mothers and children) because it only lasts about 10 minutes while a typical Clue round is much longer.

Baby Pictures

by Toni

Since I was nursing when baby #4 surprised us by his presence we weren’t sure of the due date so we went to see Barbara.  She gave us these.

UltrasoundBaby4 001

and a due date of Nov 18th … you know, because having a newborn in the mix will really make the holiday season go more smoothly.

She also told us our baby to be is a boy (which, for the record, I knew already).  Sister and Brother are both pleased with this information.  Sister because it means that she won’t have to share her room with another sibling and Brother because he likes things to be even.

She also told us that Baby is super healthy and perfect in every way.  (She didn’t use those exact words but that’s what she meant.) but she also informed us that we have marginal placenta previa.  Probably everything will be just fine because it’s still so early in the pregnancy but later we will make a trip to see Barbara again to be sure.  Other than that all is well.

As a bonus for you, here’s a baby picture that Sister drew for me when we returned.

Gracie and Sassy at the Library

by Toni

Does your library do a Summer Reading Program?  Ours does and we love it.  Today especially we loved it because after braving torrential rains and being too late to attend the overly full first show we got into the nearly empty second show and because of that (probably) Sister got chosen as a helper from the audience and this happened.

Sister is a cat lover to the core even so she didn’t seem to mind too much about being part of a dog show. :)

Is There Anything Better Than a Dollar Store Blow Up Pool?

by Toni

Hot days are here and in Oklahoma that’s pretty hot.  Upper 90’s all this week.  So what do you do in that kind of heat when the littlest among you longs to be outdoors anytime she’s not sleeping?  Find some cool entertainment, of course.

So I ask again, “Is there anything better than a dollar store blow up pool?”  You bet your britches!

The cat’s a must have.

Barbie Gets A New Dress

by Toni

Yesterday Sister asked if we could make a dress for one of her Barbie dolls.  Sure, I thought, I can find some stretchy material and artfully arrange it around Barbie such that it slightly resembles an outfit but this was not what Sister meant.  She meant actually sew a Barbie dress and at this though I balked because my sewing machine and I are incompatible.  We’ve tried to make it work (created some curtains together, hemmed a couple of jeans) but our relationship has never become what you’d call serious.  In fact it spends the bulk of its time in the closet cleverly disguised as a clothes rack.  But for Sister I would try again.  After all, how hard could it be to make something for an 11 inch doll.  …… Ahem.

DSCN0317

We worked on it most of the day off and on (mostly off when I snuck away and ate oreos to relieve stress) but finally after much broken thread and bobbins that inexplicably stop producing stitches it was completed.  Sister loves it.   I see mostly flaws but I wanted to share it with you today so that I could also share this wonderful tutorial without which this sewing challenged mom could not have made her little girl’s day.

BTW – I also found these other great links for doll clothes which I may also try …. after I get another package of oreos in the house.  After all, there’s no use starting a project unprepared.
