Yet Another Product That Is Amazingly Easy to Duplicate at Home

by Toni

A couple of months ago I bought some of these foaming soap dispensers from Amazon.  I got them from Amazon because 1) I heart having things delivered. and 2) It was a better deal on that brand than I could find locally.  The product arrived and I was pleased.  Then I got to thinking about replacements and how much plastic I would be contributing to eternity.  I also realized that the brand I’d chosen was not as wholesome as I’d thought.

~ Insert bright idea here ~

What if I made my own refill using truly organic ingredients?  Hmmm…. what if ….?

So I did and now you can too.

Foaming Soap 001

Start with a container of Dr. Bronner’s in your choice of scents … ignore the crazy label.

Foaming Soap 002

Find an empty foaming soap dispenser.  Be sure the lid will come off as not all of them do.

Foaming Soap 003

Pull out a large measuring cup.

The ratio you are going for is 4:1.  So figure out how much total liquid you need to fill your bottle and divide accordingly.  Don’t forget you’ll need to leave some room for the pump to fit back in.

Foaming Soap 006

I used 1/4 cup castile soap and added

Foaming Soap 007

1 cup of water.  Add the water slowly because you don’t want your mixture to be too sudsy.

Foaming Soap 008

Pour the solution into your dispenser and

Foaming Soap 010

Ta da!  You just saved some cash and you kept a plastic bottle from the landfill.

Go you. :-)

Currently On My Bookshelf and Other Sundry Places About the House

by Toni

A read-aloud and cookbooks by fellow bloggers (this one and this one).  Though I don’t know if I can really refer to them as “fellow” bloggers since they each receive more traffic in a day than I see in a year.  Still, a girl can dream.

Food for the soul.

Lessons to be learned

Just Finished on the bottom (Betsy-Tacy recommended here) , In the Queue between (Follow My Leader and The Phantom Tollbooth) and two delightful picture books on top.

I first checked these out from the library and fell in love with their adorable illustrations (Jim Arnosky has a number of wildlife books we like as well.)  Thinking to myself that such small books would most likely be well within budget I headed over to Amazon to place my order.  Imagine my surprise at finding prices started at $49.95 and went up!  Apparently I’m not the only one who likes these out of print books.  For two years I’ve been waiting for them to drop to a reasonable level.  Reasonable being a relative term here since I hardly expected to get them for the $4.95 listed inside the cover.  Finally for a paltry $20 I acquired them both.  I’ve been gratified too to see both the children return to them again and again in the week they’ve been here.

What are you and your children reading?

Did You Have Fun? They Did.

Halloween 001

Sister switched from her elaborate cheetah costume to an equally elaborate Chinese girl look while Brother switched from karate guy to crocodile finally settling on pirate firefighter.  We added an angel at the last minute.  The potential for stress was high and yet the prospect of more candy than they could eat in a year kept everybody on the positive side.  Especially Dora…. see how positive she looks.

Halloween 004b

We went to a local church for Trunk or Treat (apparently everyone’s doing it) and the kids’ had a blast.  Will appreciated the free hot dogs.

Halloween 006

I, on the other hand, got poked in the chin some 14 billion times by that silly hat and did not collect candy.

In other news, we created 80+ Halloween cards to exchange at our homeschool costume party where Sister did dress up as a cheetah and Brother was a karate guy.

I was a wet blanket by the way.  No really, that was my costume … a wet blanket.

Halloween and I ~ we have issues.
