About Birth - The First in a Series

March 15th, 2007 by Toni

My longtime friend and college roommate is pregnant.  She is super-excited (as am I) because she has wanted to have a baby for so, so long.  The childbirth educator in me wants to give her all kinds of technical information on pregnancy and having a baby.  The granola mommy in me has tons of emotional advice and practical tips on how to give birth “the right way.”  But the doula in me knows that every woman is Divinely designed to birth her child(ren) with her own unique style.  Often well-meaning people around her (friends, relatives, physicians) will seek to divert her from her way but if she will stay focused, if she will listen most diligently to her heart then the expectant mama will, with a little encouragement and affirmation, find the path to her most perfect birth.

With that in mind, I am declaring each Thursday until her baby arrives “Birth Day” at This Simple Life.  I will offer links to online resources, book references, memories from my own experiences, birth stories and anything else I might think of that could help guide her journey.  Please feel free to participate.  Make your notations in the comments or add a post to your own blog and send me a trackback.  There are only two rules.

#1  We are going for “encouragement and affirmation” not an “end all, be all” plan on how she should give birth.  Share your experiences / limit your opinions.

#2  BE POSITIVE!

For today, I offer a link to the most well-written birth story ever and the comment that while an unassisted childbirth (UC) isn’t for everyone it was clearly the right choice for this couple.

There’s nothing more hopeful than an expectant mother! How wonderful!

Oh my goodness! Thank you so much!!! You made me cry in what has to be the most wonderful way since I found out I was pregnant! I’ve still got about 30 weeks to go, so I’ve got plenty of time to make decisions on labor and birth, but I do have some ideas on how I would prefer things to happen. On a more immediate note, I went to my 10-week prenatal appointment yesterday and I got to hear the heartbeat! Yay!
