Screws

by Toni

A conversation with Sister

Me: “I don’t understand why people ever use straight screws.  The little star kind are so much easier.”

Sister: “Well, maybe they need to use up the screws.”

I ponder this… why would you even have a bunch of straight screws to begin with?

Sister continues: “Like maybe someone gave you a screw for your birthday and you don’t like it so you don’t use it but then you see the person and they say, “So… did you use that screw yet?”  and you have to say, “um, no.”

There’s a lesson in there somewhere.

Advent Stocking 20 & Highlights of the Day

by Toni

Advent20“Act out ‘Five Little Snowmen.’ ”

Five Little Snowmen
by Stephanie Burton
Five little snowment were very fat,
Each one wore a funny hat;
Out came the sun and melted one,
And four little snowment stood in the sun.
(continue counting down to one)
One little nowman was very sad,
He still had his funny hat,
Down came the snow
and the children played,
And built four more snowmen on that winter’s day!

Whew, sure glad this was an easy one .  Today was a busy day.  I dropped Sister & her cousin K at a Little Gym camp this morning (9 to 12) while Brother & I went Christmas shopping.  We’d already finished the extended family (I love Amazon, Hallmark & DaleAndThomas, BTW.) but hadn’t gotten a thing for my two.  The stores weren’t so busy that early but Toy R Us sure showed some holiday wear.  This may be a bit of an exaggeration but it seemed there were as many empty or scantily stocked shelves as full ones and most of the employees seemed just as empty.  A trip to Mardel was more productive and more peaceful.  Have you ever noticed that some places you walk into immediately put you on edge (Toys R Us.) and others set you at ease and make want to stay? (Mardel)

A quick lunch then back to pick up the girls.  Drop K off at her ‘last day of school’ party.  Drop off a gift for Sister’s teacher’s and hurry home to take care of baby E.  (Aunt R & I planned a sitter swap – we take care of their child then they takes care of ours.  Both couples get a date … for free.)  Back at the house… CRISIS!  With Grandma & Papa going out of town Aunt R planned a While You Were Out scheme.  Paint the hallway.  No small task with only a couple of days, an infant and no crew to back you up but she had done it.  The Grandparent’s were due back soon and the only thing left was to pull off the tape.  Who could have predicted a rainy day that wouldn’t allow the paint to cure completely and who could have predicted that it (the paint) would start coming off in strips WITH the tape.  ARRGH!  Without going into any more detail, everything turned out well in the end. (Thank the Lord and the inventor of the exacto knife.)

Rainbow

What more fitting symbol for such a rain turned to sunshine sort of day than a rainbow.  Sister spied this one out the window and I hurried to snap this photo.  An absolutely perfect bow that spanned the sky, it only lasted for a few minutes before fading away.  A gentle reminder, we are in His care and He will never allow our life to be flooded by circumstance.

Diorama Update & Advent Stocking 19

by Toni

Advent19WinterDioramaSister wasn’t feeling well today so we did our diorama in bed to help pass the time.

For today’s stocking “Make shadow puppets.”  I’m imagining cuddling in bed with two squirming children and a flashlight.”

Wrestling Match

by Toni

Another one that never got published…

Our kids love to wrestle on the bed.  Not the safest activity, I know, but with two queen beds pushed together (more on that another day) it’s hard to resist (and even harder to prevent).  Today in the middle of a round, Sister got really wild and tossed Brother to the bed, leaping on top of him so he couldn’t move.  Brother’s reaction?

“PEESE, DON’ EAT ME!!”

Where do they come up with this stuff?

Superdog

by Toni

Hmm – here’s one written a few weeks ago but never published…..can you tell I’m doing blog cleanup today?

ReadingToTheCat

We chose Superdog by Caralyn Buehner, Mark Buehner as one of our books this week.  The premise, that anyone can be a hero with hard work and determination, is a good one and I am glad we found it but we did not expect the imaginings it would spark.

On Thanksgiving while Will and Uncle B were talking Brother swooped in with a blanket draped across his back, proudly proclaiming, “I Superdog!”  A few minutes later he returned sans cape and when questioned declared, “I not Superdog, I kitty.” *pause* “ROAR!  Hee hee, I loud.”

Apparently, it’s a story even cats like.

Cold Chickens and Popularity

by Toni

Like most bloggers I keep track of my site stats.  I don’t know exactly who is visiting but I can see how many people come and what they are looking at.  I share this because the most popular post to date is by far Cold and Chickens which leads me to believe that a lot of people must have cold chickens or… my readers are an odd bunch.  Though I suspect some truth in the latter it is the former that I will address today.

Probably you were looking for some information on how to keep your chickens warm this winter.  We are by no means experts around here.  This is the first winter I’ve had chickens since I was child but here is what we have learned.

  • A wet chicken is a cold chicken. So do your best to provide a shelter that will stay Roostdry even in freezing rain and snow.
  • Wind – the same thing that can cool a chicken in the summer can also cool them in the winter.  Provide a space that is out of the wind and relatively free from drafts.  In a colder climate than Oklahoma’s it may be necessary to eliminate drafts completely but here where the temperature drops just below freezing (20 to 28 degrees) for only three or four days at a time this is what our coop looks like.  In the spring the blue tarp will come off and the front will remain open.
  • Frozen water does not hydrate.  When the temp is above freezing AutoWatererour little auto waterer does a fabulous job.  (This is where I got it from… I get my egg cartons from here too.  Great service.)  I clean it once a week but other than that it is maintenance free. (The supply comes from a rain barrel that I filled with water but which will eventually be fed by a gutter.)  Below freezing the unit obviously did not function.  At that point I switched to a rotation of 2 standard metal waterers.  In the mornings I placed the frozen waterer in the garage sink to thaw and put a fresh, unfrozen waterer in the pen.  By noon the process had to be repeated and once more at night.  I considered getting a heater but for only a few days couldn’t really justify the expense.
  • Put the food in or near the shelter.  I usually feed my chickens (kitchen scraps – no AutoFeedermeat – and a mixture of hen scratch & crumbles) in a trough at the end of their pen but in freezing weather I fill the auto feeder and place it just inside the shelter by the laying boxes.  That way I don’t have to stay in the cold feeding them and they don’t have to get out in the cold to eat.  (I don’t use the auto feeder all the time because there is way too much waste.)
  • Cold weather may cause your hens to go off their laying but warmer weather will return everything to normal.  (example: below freezing = 5 eggs, today, cold but not freezing = 19 eggs).

That’s about all I have to offer right now… seems like enough.  :)

Advent Stocking 18 — What was I thinking?!?

by Toni

Advent18Is anyone else feeling as I do that this advent stocking thing has gone on long enough?  I don’t think I’ve longed so much for Christmas to arrive since I was a child.  Today’s stocking #18 was “Create a Winter Diorama.”  Perhaps we could just skip it …. but no … Sister is still keeping track of the puppet show we skipped back on day 4.  Perhaps tomorrow.  Our sitter called.  She has strep throat which means bed for her and no date for us.  This might be good filler.

Advent Stockings 16 & 17

by Toni

Advent16Advent17#16 “Tell a story together.  Each person gets a turn.”  Hmm… this is one of those things that was better in the concept stage.

#17 “Make ice candles.” This is the kind we made but this one looks fun too.”

P.S.  If as you’re reading this it occurs to you that you haven’t gotten a Christmas card from me yet… don’t worry!  I’m sending them out today…. I promise.  You should get it sometime in January. :)

Dog and Mouse

by Toni

KristaBySisterWell it seems as if Krista may be ours.  We posted a sign near where we found her and contacted the local animal shelter.  No one has responded so far.  She is a sweet one and so intelligent that if anyone does come to claim her I might just make an offer.  We will take her to the vet this coming week if there are still no takers.  She will need a checkup and perhaps shots.  How is it that even the free pets end up costing money?

Hmm.. about the mouse.  I thought of taking my friend M’s suggestion and naming him Hitler but it seems Houdini would be more apt.  He visited both my traps, took all my cheese and then in spite left a little mouse note that read, “HA! HA! I moved your cheese.”  Clever little bugger.  Laugh now. ~ Your day will come.

*Update – Houdini passed on Dec. 17, 2006.

Advent Stockings 14 & 15

by Toni

Oops, we’re falling behind on the stocking thing…

Advent14#14 “Create a candle wax painting of the star that led the wise men to Jesus.”  We didn’t ever quite capture the star but we had a good time first pouring hot wax on our paper in some random design then painting over the wax with watercolor.  And since we had hot wax available we talked about letters and how people used to seal them with wax.  Then we sealed some of our own imaginary invitations.  Brother, obviously too young to be using hot wax seemed content to blow our candles out for us and make charcoal drawings with leftover (cooled) match stubs.

Advent14#15 “Color something together.”  We decided to skip this one in favor of making Sister a new piggy bank instead.  She has been racking up quite a stash of cash lately but has been keeping it in a plastic baggy.  Grandma started this saving business a couple of months ago by giving each of the grandkids a memory verse and telling them when they could say it perfectly she would not only give them a quarter but also a dog bank to keep it in.  Sister was so proud the day she got hers.  She couldn’t help playing with it and wanted to take it everywhere.  Rushed little hands holding too many things and ”Crash!”  The poor little dog never had a chance.  The new bank is fashioned from an old peanut can covered in pretty paper.  Simple and relatively unbreakable.
