Thursdays are school days for Sister and this past Thursday Aunt P. graciously offered to take Brother with her to work (at the church nursery). So Wednesday evening I systematically went through the house doing every little task that might distract me from a much anticipated morning alone. I even went to bed a bit early so I would be fully rested to enjoy the next day. But at 1 am a plaintiff, “mama, mama.” woke me up and I rolled over just in time to see Sister relieve her stomach of its contents. Thankfully, Brother slept through the whole episode including the changing of the sheets and as Sister too settled back to sleep part of me thought I would still get my precious alone time. A fever the next morning proved it was not to be and this quote came to mind… “A mother is someone who when faced with five plates and only four pieces of pie promptly declares, ‘I never really cared for pie.’ “ Sister and Will are of the same sort when it comes to illness …. which is the opposite sort from me. They like to be coddled and cuddled. They want to have milk toast brought to them and they want you to just stay near while they eat it. And after eight years of marriage and five years of being a mom I must confess that all of this attention is well worth the trouble for it is the fastest way to heal them.
